Electronic Travel Authorization

Mandatory Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA)

The UK is rolling out an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) system, which is mandatory for certain travelers visiting the UK. Here's an overview of who will need it and when:

  1. Already in Effect (as of November 2023): Nationals of Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries (Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, UAE) are required to apply for an ETA before traveling to the UK.

  2. From January 8, 2025: Non-European nationals who do not need a visa to visit the UK (e.g., citizens of the United States, Canada, and Australia) must have an ETA for travel or transit.

  3. From April 2, 2025: European nationals from countries that previously did not require visas will also need an ETA. Applications for this group will open on March 5, 2025.

The ETA is a digital authorization linked to your passport, costing £10, and is valid for two years or until the passport expires. It allows for multiple stays of up to six months at a time. British and Irish citizens, as well as non-Irish residents traveling within the Common Travel Area, are exempt
