What to Pack for Summer School

Your Ultimate Packing Guide What to Bring for an Unforgettable Summer in the UK!

The excitement is building! Soon, you'll be embarking on an incredible journey to the International Summer School for Teens (ISSFT) in the UK – whether it's amidst the historic charm of Oxford or the stunning landscapes surrounding Stirling. To help you prepare for an unforgettable adventure filled with learning, laughter, and new friendships, we've put together this comprehensive packing guide.

The key to packing for a British summer? Layers, practicality, and a dash of personal flair! The UK weather can be wonderfully varied, sometimes offering four seasons in a single day, so being prepared is essential.

Here’s your checklist to ensure you arrive ready for anything:

1. Clothing: Embrace the Layers!

Think versatility and comfort. While we hope for glorious sunshine, be ready for cooler evenings and occasional showers.

  • T-shirts & Tops (5-7): A mix of short-sleeved and a few long-sleeved options. breathable fabrics are best.

  • Jumpers/Sweaters (2-3): Essential for cooler days and evenings. A fleece or wool blend is ideal.

  • Hoodie/Zip-up Jacket (1): Great for throwing on quickly.

  • Jeans/Trousers (2-3 pairs): Comfortable for everyday wear and excursions.

  • Shorts (2-3 pairs): For those warmer, sunny days.

  • Skirts/Dresses (2-3): Optional, but nice for relaxed days or social events.

  • Waterproof Rain Jacket (1): NON-NEGOTIABLE! A lightweight, packable waterproof jacket is your best friend in the UK.

  • Swimsuit/Swim Trunks (1-2): For pool sessions, sports, or potential water activities.

  • Underwear & Socks (enough for 7-10 days): Consider athletic socks for sports and comfortable everyday socks.

  • Pyjamas/Sleepwear (2 sets):

Top Tip: Check the laundry facilities available at your specific campus. At ISSFT we provide a Free Laundry Service mid-session and facilities are available on campus (Stirling and Oxford) for additional washes.

2. Footwear: Comfort is Key!

You’ll be doing a fair amount of walking, exploring, and possibly engaging in sports.

  • Comfortable Walking Shoes/Trainers (1 pair): Your primary shoe for daily activities, classes, and exploring. Ensure they are well broken-in!

  • Casual Shoes/Sandals (1 pair): For relaxing around campus or warmer days.

  • Sports Shoes/Trainers (1 pair): If you plan on participating in sports or fitness activities. At ISSFT, our Sports Leadership students will need an additional (old pair) for wearing in water.

  • Flip-flops/Sliders: Useful for walking to and from the pool or shared bathroom areas (though at ISSFT bathrooms are all en-suite.)

3. Toiletries & Personal Care: Home Comforts Away From Home

While some basics might be available, it’s best to bring your preferred items.

  • Toothbrush & Toothpaste

  • Shampoo & Conditioner

  • Soap/Body Wash

  • Deodorant

  • Hairbrush/Comb

  • Sunscreen (even on cloudy days, UV rays can be strong!)

  • Insect Repellent (especially if you're sensitive to bites)

  • Any personal medications (with a doctor's note and clearly labelled instructions)

  • Feminine hygiene products (if applicable)

  • Small first-aid kit (band-aids, antiseptic wipes, pain relievers – for minor issues)

Remember: If flying, ensure all liquids comply with airline hand luggage restrictions. Consider solid toiletries where possible.

4. Academic Essentials: Ready for Learning!

You're here to learn and grow, so don't forget these:

  • Small Backpack/Day Bag: For carrying your books, water bottle, and essentials to classes and on excursions.

  • Notebooks & Pens/Pencils: Even though technology is prevalent, traditional note-taking can be very effective.

  • Laptop/Tablet & Charger: For academic work and staying connected. Remember a universal travel adapter!

  • Headphones: Useful for quiet study time or listening to music.

5. Travel Documents & Money: Don't Leave Home Without Them!

Keep these safe and easily accessible (but not too accessible to others).

  • Passport & Visa (if required): Absolutely vital. Keep copies stored separately.

  • Flight Tickets/Itinerary

  • Your ETA

  • ISSFT Acceptance Letter & Important Contact Information

  • Travel Insurance Details

  • Any Parental Consent Forms

  • UK Plug Adapter (Type G): Essential for charging your electronics.

  • Debit/Credit Card: Inform your bank of your travel plans.

  • Some Local Currency (GBP): For initial expenses or small purchases.

6. Miscellaneous & Fun Items: Personalize Your Experience!

  • Small Towel: While ISSFT provides towels, a small extra one can be handy.

  • Camera: Capture those amazing memories!

  • Book/E-reader: For downtime.

  • Small gifts from your home country: A lovely way to share your culture with new friends.

  • A positive attitude and an open mind! These are perhaps the most important things to pack for a global experience like ISSFT.

What NOT to Bring:

  • Excessive Valuables: While we ensure a safe environment, it's always wise to leave very expensive jewellery or irreplaceable items at home.

  • Large Amounts of Cash: Cards are widely accepted in the UK.

  • Illicit or Prohibited Items: This goes without saying, but adhere strictly to all UK laws and ISSFT rules.

We can't wait to welcome you to ISSFT for a summer of discovery, academic growth, and lifelong friendships. Packing smart will allow you to focus on making the most of every incredible moment. If you have any specific questions about what to pack, please don't hesitate to reach out to our team.

See you soon!
